On today’s lifestyle article. we take a trip to reality, as we hear from one of Nigeria’s fast growing talent.
Am Otu Abimbola Ayinke, a graduate of Mass Communication from Cross River University of Technology, Calabar. I’m from Boki LGA in Cross River State. I’m a theatre artist by profession, poet, visual artist and chef.
In 2015, while in my 300level, I started a business UNIQUE FRUITS AND VEGGIES. It is a business which deals with the sales of fresh fruits and vegetables, fruit juices and Vegetable juices, fruit salad and Vegetable salad, smoothies and fruits trees.
The idea of the business came by because of the necessity to get extra income to help myself in school as well as solve the problem of unhealthy eating.
Over the years, I realized that weeks or even months will pass without me taking any fruit or it’s produce. This was same for most of my colleagues and other people around me.
I decided to make a habit of getting fruits daily, no matter how much it costs and within a month I felt healthier. It wasn’t just the food I was eating, the fruits and vegetables were playing a major role of great digestion and also making my skin smoother.
It would have been selfish of me to keep all of the goodness to myself, so I got a point of sale somewhere close to school and I started selling fresh fruits and it’s produce. The proceeds from this business helped a lot in paying some school bills, most especially in my final year when I had to write my project.
It is a thing of great joy to deliver these fruits and produces to my customers, to see the light in their faces as they enjoy themselves and to see them glow by day as a result of healthy eating and living.
Back to Lagos now, it has become a bit challenging. Unlike Calabar, the cost of living is very high in Lagos and even harder when it’s a business space and so I do not have a point of sale(shop, stall or kiosk).
Most of the patronage I have received has been through social media(fb: Unique Fruits and Veggies) and calls(07032193775,07055422728). It has been a sole business with just myself running all it’s angles.
There are plans to fully register it as a business name so it can become global. One of the major challenges I have now is funding, if I can get financial support from individuals and corporate bodies it will go a long way in making the business a success. I’m opened to grants, sme funds, investments and any kind of support.
Unique Fruits and Veggies will not only serve me as a profit-making venture, it will also provide job opportunities for other young adults as I will employ as many of them who are ready to learn and also make a living for themselves.
