A suspected armed robber whose gang has been terrorizing residents of Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, has been burnt to death by an angry mob after he was caught in action.
Calabar Reporters report that the man who is in his 20s, was a member of a seven-man gang that had invaded the Ikot Abasi Obori, Kasuk Town and the popular Ikot Ishie Market all in the Calabar Municipal Area Council, robbing residents and traders.
Tired of their activities, the people mobilized and went after the gang despite the fact that they had guns and charms on them. The unlucky member was caught while the rest managed to escape and the crowd meted outinstant jungle justice on him.
According to an eye witness who gave his name as Daniel, the armed robbers had on bulletproof charms which were to enable them to escape but the charm failed the unfortunate robber who was caught and killed.
“After the guys robbed the area, the people teamed up against them, chased them down with planks and all kinds of weapons.
They were carrying guns but it seems they were with fewer bullets. The others ran away, but the mob succeeded in catching this one.
He was beaten severely but the cuts were impenetrable. The crowd stripped him and removed some red clothes around his waist before any metal could penetrate him.
He was later burnt to death that late evening by the angry crowd,”Daniel explained.
Other witnesses narrated how the gang had been terrorizing the areas, robbing homes and shops with reckless abandon with the police unable to do anything to stop them.
