Yay or Nay: Is it wrong to appoint Amina Zakari, Buhari’s niece as Chairman, Collation Centre Committee even though she has been INEC’s top official?

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, had on Thursday, inaugurated two committees – Collation Centre and Electoral Logistics – chaired by Zakari and AVM Ahmed Mu’azu (rtd) respectively.

This appointment has risen concern among some Nigerians, including the PDP, some political parties and presidential candidates, who feel the 2019 general elections will not be free and fair because Mrs Amina Zakari is President Buhari’s niece.

Amina had held several positions at INEC, was a National Electoral Commissioner and was appointed as Acting Chairman of the commission in 2015 after Professor Attahiru Jega‘s tenure expired.

The PDP also alleges that Mrs Zakari played some roles in the 2018 governorship election in Osun state.
